I had a keystroke combination that worked on Word 97--Ctrl + ;--but it no
longer works. Does anyone know of such a combination to produce the "check"
symbol on Word XP?

Find the check symbol you like in the Insert | Symbol dialog and click on
Shortcut Key to assign this shortcut key to it.

That was never a standard shortcut, but you can create it in any Word
version.

Open the Insert > Symbol dialog. Set the font name to Wingdings.
Scroll the list of symbols down to the bottom and click the check mark
near the right end of the last row. Click the Shortcut Key button.
Press Ctrl+; and click Assign and then Close.

Thanks Jay and Suzanne. You've been most helpful.
I don't recall ever creating that keystroke combination, but maybe I did.
In any case, now I know how to "recreate" it!
