Ok I have searched the group and have seen several references to the
open/repair option when it comes to this error. I have tried all
types of other resolutions including, trying to open in Word 2000,
making sure the file is there, opening Word and dropping it in, double
clicking the file, file open from within word. Apparently my version
of 2002 does not have this open/repair option. I am currently at Word
2002 (10.4524.4219)SP-2. Is this a hotfix? can it be downloaded? Is
it in Technet? Do I have to contact Microsoft and wait forever to get
the fix? Please help

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside the
application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the Registered
File Type needs to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Thank you for your response Beth but I am not trying to repair Word
just the document. I'm referring to KB article 328100. in which it
says that you use the File/open and repair for MS Word 2002. As for
opening I have tried just about everyway I can think of.

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,

If the problem occurs on a single document then it could be that the
document is corrupt. Here are a few things to try:

If the document contains graphics then in Word go to Tools/Options/View and
turn in "Picture Placeholders" and "Draft Font".
If the document contains links then on the General tab make sure "Update
automatic links at Open" is turned off.

Try using a document link to retrieve the corrupt document:
- Create a new document
- Copy some text from another document
- In the new document use Edit/Paste Special and select "Paste Link"
- Go to Edit/Links and change the source of the link to the document you
can not open

If this works then return to Edit/Links and break the link to the source
document.

For additional troubleshooting steps/methods take a look at this article:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm

You also try a recovery utility such as those from
http://www.officerecovery.com/, however they aren't free downloads. :)
