"The Operation Failed"

I am using Outlook 2002, which came with Outlook XP. It has several
configured accounts getting mail from a variety of internet accounts.
It has worked fine for about 2 years, and I have not altered any of
its settings for at least 6 months. However, it has spontaneously
begun reporting "The operation failed" whenever I click Send/Receive.
The same error occurs if I click Tools --> Options --> Mail Setup -->
Send/Receive. I have tried rebooting and starting Outlook with the
"/resetfolders" switch. I am running Windows 2000 Server.
