Woops! I'm a virgin at this, so forgive me.Thanks for pointing out my error.
My problem is that th very useful (to me) save backup facility that popped
up after a certain number of days whn closing Outlook has become
disfunctional; it seems to go into some sort of loop and doesn't complete its
task.

I have the same problem - Office 2007 - windows xp pro - Microsoft outlook
backup tool

My last effective backup date was 2 days ago. Now each time that I close
outlook it does not work. Nothing happens. It is not in disabled items, and
I have attempted reinstall of the product several times. I would appreicate
any feedback

Does File menu still holds the Backup... command?

If it still does, probably Outlook doesn't fully close on your machine. Make
sure you have Service Pack 2 applied to Office 2007. If it still happens
after that, see;
