This document could not be registered - Word 2003

Hello,

I have a User that receives this error message when launching Word 2003.
"This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create
links from other documents to this document." She has to reboot before Word
works correctly, but the problem reappears after a day or two.

Any suggestions to fix this problem.

Thanks.

It's possible that something has deactivated OLE/DCOM. To see... run
services.msc (services console) and reactivate the DCOM Server Process
Launcher. Right-click it in the list of local services and choose
Properties. In the General tab, set Startup type: to Automatic. If the
Status: is Stopped, then click Start, then click OK.

Thank you for your quick response; however, the User just called me over to
her desk when the error occurred again, and the DCOM Server Process Launcher
was started and it was set to automatic. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

The other "usual suspects" are:

1. Misbehaving add-in.

2. Corrupted Normal.dot.

3. Corrupted registry entry (usually the Data key).

This article describes how to troubleshoot the problem:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

For starters, I would try renaming Normal.dot *and* the Data key (which is
here for Word 2003):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

What's happening sounds like a corruption/re-corruption scenario... although
it's possible that an add-in is at fault.
