Time Issue

I am Ph.D. student (cancer cell biology) and am new to Project 2007.
The issue I am having is that every task is a fixed duration and not
effort driven. Most tasks in a lab are you start something and then
you have to wait. Therefore, a task might require 3 days to complete
because of the wait times. These wait times make it possible to
overlap multiple tasks in any given day. The question is: Is there a
wait to uncouple the length of time a task requires from the resource
time devoted to it. For example, a procedure takes 3 days (72 hours)
but it only requires about 10 total hours of my time spread over those
three days. How do I set Project to model this?

Thanks,
Adrian.

If you assign yourself to the task, you can then type in the figure of
10hours to represent the amount of work.

Hi

Going ahead from the excellent suggestions from Dave and Julie.

After changing the task to Fixed duration and assigning 10 hrs work for an
activity of 3 days duration and 8 hrs working every day you will get 42% of
your time units assigned every day to this activity as inbuilt formula is
Work = Units*Duration. But, if these 10 hrs are not distributed equally in 3
days, then after resource assignment go to Resource Usage view and as
required change assignment in each relevant cell. For example you may be
scheduled to devote 4hrs, 4hrs and 2hrs on three days, or 4 hrs, 2hrs and
4hrs. So, accordingly make the changes.

I hope it helps.
