Totaling Instances

I have a column of cells that share the same drop down menu. I need to totalize the number of times each item in the menu occurs in that column. The items in the dd menu are text. Any ideas? Thank

Are you a dd menu via Data Validation or from the Forms Toolbar. If its the latter, take a look at Data -> Validation; select "List" for the "Allow:" box and then follow Frank's advice.
