Tracking Table

I have switched to the tracking table on Microsoft Project. I have entered
100% in the complete field for two tasks. My act. dur is 5.28 days. I dont
understand how it is 5.28 days when they act duration for one task is 1 day
and the other task is 4 days. The remaining duration is 51.72 days. Where
are these decimals coming from? I read somewhere the actual duration =
duration * percent complete, but I'm coming up with 3.55. My percent
complete is 71. I did 5 * .71.

Well what did your original plan say the durations would have been? How
many hours of work did you put in and at what level of effort?

If you put in (for example) 100 hours and your standard working day is 8
hours, then the duration must be 100/8 if it is worked on full time.

How can Project know that your tasks lasted for 1 and 4 days
respectively if you haven't told it that?

Probably from conversions between the remaining work in hours as
illustrated above.

What is actually wrong with a decimal duration? Your projects probably
don't always last integral numbers of days.

I guess this is a different task now because the ones that were
discussed previously were 100% complete.

The actual duration is how long the task has been worked on for. So, if
a 5 day task is 70% complete, then that implies that you have done 3.5
days of work on it so that is correct.

Don't forget that % complete is the percentage of planned time that has
passed and not the percentage of work that has been completed.
