Tracking tasks - assigning work to PS users and generic resources

Mauricio@BVFG

Hello team,

I have a task which is assigned resources from the resource pool and global
resources. For this global resources I have already changed the Workgroup to
none so that I don't receive spooler errors when publishing the file to the
server.

Project users are able to submit their timesheet for the task; project
manager can approve their timesheet and the task % complete increases
accordingly, but what about the global resources? If I try modifying manually
the taks % complete I receive a message stating the task is probably
unsynched, which is true given the fact global resources are not submitting a
timesheet.

How do I manage this scenario to show both Project Server users and global
resources work reflected in the task % complete?

Thanks in advance

Mauricio

I do not understand what you are trying to accomplish by setting up
enterprise resources with a Workgroup value of None in the Enterprise
Resource Pool. Are you saying that these resources will not use Project
Server to report on project progress? If so, this makes no sense since it
appears your organization is using Managed Time Periods, as evidenced by the
"out of synch" error message after entering actuals in the Microsoft Project
plan. When you use Managed Time Periods, Project Server assumes that all
actuals are entered on the timesheet page for each resource assigned to
projects. The lone exception is that the PM is allowed to manually update
the % Complete value on Milestone tasks.

So, given the fact that I can't figure out what you are trying to
accomplish, perhaps you need to explain further. Let us know.

Dale,

Thanks for your reply. Let me enhance the issue description:

I have a task in a project and I want to assign Global and local resources
to it.

Assigning Global Resouces is not a problem. The issue is assigning local
resources. In order to avoid the spooler error informing about using local
resources in enterprise projects I have followed what is defined in "Use a
local resource in an enterprise project"
(http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/UseLocalResource.htm)

Local resources will not use Project Server to report on project progress.
We are indeed using Managed Time Periods.

Global resources are OK entering their time using PWA.

Assuming I have a local and a global resource for a fixed unit task that
last 8 hours, global resource will report 4 hours in PWA and the local
resource is assigned the other 4 hours; since this is a local account how the
PM can modify the task % complete for the remaining 50%?

I hope there is a solution for this issue ;)

Thanks

Now I understand. :) If you are using Managed Time Periods, then this
prevents you from using local resources in a project. Again, this is
because using Managed Time Periods assumes that all actuals are updating
from each team member's PWA timesheet. Hope this helps.
