Tried to fix Word 2000 when opening documents

Word 2000 is crashing when opening documents. I tried to
rename the "normal.dot" file to ".old" as suggested but I
am denied access when trying to do so. What else can I do
to rename files to correct the problem?

If you are denied permission it probably mean that the
file is in use running in the background. try closing any
office realted software by pressing ctrl+alt+delete. this
should give you access to change the .dot to a .old or
whatever.
