Trouble Using Paste Special with Links

C

Carolyn McDonald

Trying to link specific milestones from several project
plans into a program level Top Plan. (Do not want to
Master/SubProject because of excessive detail and
organization is not how we want to track)

Have linked a few fields as a test with 3 files and it
works.

However, after linking many fields across a limited number
of files, later get error on Update when opening the Top
Plan that Project cannot find the source file. (Even
though stored in same place, or if pre-opened).

Are there limits to number of links possible? Are there
directory path limits causing the problem?

Those sorts of links are fragile. And when they are broken they are not easy
to diagnose.
Since Project 98 Microsoft has been offering an alternative (preferred
method)
You should use the interproject link feature instead.

In your top level plan, have one unconstrained dummy task
that is a successor to all the milestones that you want to
display. As a successor, the dummy task will not impact
the lower level schedules. The default setting is to
display external predecessors and successors.
