typing effect

I want a title to type on one letter at at time--well a portion of it
anyway. How do I do that? I can't seem to find an animation effect that
will do that.

What PowerPoint version?
In PowerPoint 2002/Xp and above,
Click Add Effect > Entrance > Appear.
Double click on the added effect,
Click on the animate text dropdown and select By Letter.
Adjust the speed according to your preference.

Alternately, you can try Entrance > Color Typewriter too.
