unable to see my messages

I open my outlook express 2003 and it says that i have mail in my inbox,
however when i click on the icon to read them, nothing apears on the screen,
just a blank screen.

No such thing as outlook express 2003. What have you got - Outlook EXPRESS
or Outlook 2003? (Help-About will tell you)

Where are you seeing this message about unread mail? Are you talking about
Windows XP and the Welcome screen before you log in?
