Unable to use New Office Document or Open Office Document commands

If I click New Office Document in my Programs menu, Word
starts and I get a template list, but when I try to open
a template nothing happens. If I click Open Office
Document, Word starts and my document list appears, but
if I click a document, nothing happens. These commands
will not function. I just did a repair reinstall of both
Word and Windows XP. Everything else works fine. I have a
Dell Dimension 8100 1.5Ghz w/256MB RAM and XP Home
Edition with Service Pack 1. Also have Word SR-1. Would
appreciate any thoughts on this.
