Did you mark the citations with index entries? If so, click on the ¶ button
on the Standard toolbar to toggle on display of non-printing characters,
click on Edit | Replace, search for the XE field, replace all with nothing,
and click on the ¶ button again to toggle off display of non-printing
characters.
