unusual Office xp 2003 setup problem

Here's the scenerio:
New computer runnning XP Pro
installed retail box of office 97 (left over package we
never used)
needed newer version of Access.
bought Office XP 2003 Pro Upgrade
installation detects old version 97 fine and continues
with installation, enter product key...etc...etc...
nearing the end of installation, the progress bar begins
to move backwards, stating "Rolling back installation"
installation routine continues to un-install Office
2003...
when finally finished, states "Office installation
completed".....but we are still left with just the old
Office 97....
this entire scenerio also happens if we try to upgrade
from Office 97 to Office 2000....

any ideas?

any ideas?

What happens if you *UNINSTALL* 97 completely, insert 2003 CD and just
insert 97 disc when prompted? Make sure every trace of 97 is gone first
(this may involve editing the registry, so back it up first!)
