Unwanted entries in Table of Contents

Studebaker

Hello,

I marked all my entries that I wanted to appear in my TOC by using ALT SHFT O.
When I generated my TOC I noticed there were entries in it that I never
marked to appear in my TOC. I went through my document to see if I had
accidentally marked these unwanted entries and I noticed that:
1) most of them had a little solid black box next to them on the left hand
margin when I turned on "Show Paragraph Marks".
2) a couple of them were in a table or the heading to a table. (They may
have had a solid black boxes next to them...I don't remember).

What is this about? and...
How can I fix this? I have a big document and I don't want to waste time
editing my TOC.

Thank you

By default, all paragraphs with an outline level other than Body Text are
included in the TOC. If you want your TOC built on TC fields only, check the
box for "Table entry fields" and clear the boxes for "Styles" and "Outline
levels" in the Table of Contents Options dialog.

The black bullets are irrelevant; they just indicate that the paragraph is
formatted as "Keep with next," "Keep lines together," "Page break before,"
or "Suppress line numbering." See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.
