Update graphics each time the slide is loaded?

What does "link to file" really do? I have four JPGs, one GIF, and one MPG
that I'd like to embed in PowerPoint v.X in such a way that the files were
either updated each time the slide is displayed in slide show mode.

Can this happen? Or will "link to file" only update each time the data file
itself is opened?

Thank you for your time and attention.

What does "link to file" really do?

It goes out and re-imports the image each time the presentation's opened.
For example, if your picture's in the presentation linked to PHOTO.JPG, then
you copy my photo to PHOTO.JPG, you'll be staring me in the face next time
you open the presentation.

So I wouldn't do that if I were you. The shock's hard on the heart.

PowerPoint doesn't do this, unfortunately. Shyam Pillai at
www.mvps.org/skp/ has an addin that might help with this; it's for PCs, but
the code might be adaptable. It's worth a look (but note that add-in/vba
code won't work in PPT viewers, only PPT itself, and if the addin relies on
events, it'll be a nonstarter on Mac, alas)
