update links not asking...

if a workbook contains links to another workbook, it
normally comes up and asks whether you want it to update
the links or not.

if the workbook that is linked to is already open when the
file with the links is opened, it doesn't ask.

Are there other reasons that a workbook would not stop to
ask about updating links, but just go and automatically do
it?

There is an option to specify whether you want to be asked
to update links or not.

Tools>Options>Edit tab Then a check box for "ask to update
automatic links" If you uncheck this, you will not be
asked to update any automatic links to other files.
