Update Task Duration for Same Day

Confused

When I update a task that was estimated to take one day but was completed the
same day as the start date, I lose the bar on the gantt chart. It shows the
duration as "0" and the bar disappears. If I change the actual to "hours",
it changes the finish date to the next day. But I want the start and finish
days to be the same and still view the bar on the gantt chart.

Hello,

In the Start and Finish fields, display the hours and minutes : Tools /
Options / View : date format : choose something with 12:33.
Nevertheless, in this newsgroup you will find a lot of posts explaining that
you would avoid entering dates to set a task duration.

Thank you for your suggestion. When I update the task, entering 100%
complete with a duration of 4 hrs, it still shows the finish date of the next
day. (I really need to view everything in days so changing the tools option
didn't help me.) Shouldn't Project adjust the finish date to reflect the
actual finish date when the task is updated?

A couple of options would be:
- Set the actual start and actual finish more precisely (by entering
25/06/07 15:35 for example)
- Use Task View to move the actual work to the day/hours the work was
carried out on

It might be illustrative to look at an expanded view (looking at the
huors) of the Gantt Chart or Task View to see where Project has
scheduled the work. If it has scheduled it to start late on one day,
then it may not be possible for Project to schedule your 4 hours in the
same day.

At the end of the day, if you enter the actual work in the right places,
you will get the result you desire.
