Upgrade from Office 97 to Office 2000

I have just purchased Office 2K and am running Win98SE. It says that it will
detect the earlier version and eliminate any files not needed. Are there any
suggestions or items I should be wary of before I get started. I have a lot
of 97 formatted xls and word files, and according to the book those should be
read just fine.

Thanks for any assistance you have.

I assume you bought 2000 from eBay as it's long since been discontinued
commercially (as has all support - if you lost any discs MS wouldn't give
you replacements). Why didn't you buy XP? OK, it's been discontinued too
(though it's still supported) but it's still readily for sale at Amazon (and
other places).

It's usually better to do a clean install of Office.

If you still have the media for Office 97, and you are sure that you can
read the media, and Office 97 is the FULL version, not the upgrade version,
then you could do the following, BUT UNTIL YOU FIRST MAKE A FULL BACKUP OF
YOUR SYSTEM, and have a bottle of aspiring handy.

1. Uninstall Office 97.
2. Install Office 2000. During the install you may be asked to insert the
Office 97 CD-ROM.

Another alternative, the one I've been using, is to install another copy of
the OS in a separate partition and then install the newer version of Office
under the new OS.

Hi Howard,

Thanks. I'm not sure if it's worth it or not. Your saying that even if I
do a full uninstall of 97 that I'll have problems getting 2000
installed?????. And then have a full backup of the system?? I don't have
that modern a system with r/w cd/dvd etc.

Is 2000 that much better than 97 that i have. One of the main applications
I wanted was the ability to use Outlook (if it had improved any) to be able
to put tags/flags on my emails that I could click on and read notes I had
written, schedule todo's/appointments etc.. I havn't gotten any answers yet
to the viability of that application so am waiting to install.

I would appreciate any more infor you could offer.

Thanks
Mike

Actually I bought it from a private party at a church garage sale that had
purchased several for his business, this one was unopened. I'm running an
older system that won't support the newer operating systems. It won't even
support more that 8 gig hard driver LOL.

Thanks

If you're running Win 98 you can use a larger hard disk. I had a 20GB on
mine.

It's not the operating system but the mfg. bios that prevents the upgrade.
No ability to update the bios as well.

That bites. That system must be older than mine then. Mine is a March 2000
model.
