I am upgrading the standard trial version 2003 on my new computer to a
purchased version of Office professional 2003. The FAQs state that you can't
upgrade to a different version without uninstalling and reinstalling the
software. How can I upgrade the software without losing my Outlook data. - I
need to retain the emails and folders I have created.
Please advise!

Uninstall the trial and install the purchased version. Uninstalling never touches users data.

Is there a way to back up user data "just in case"? I am amazed that
uninstalling outlook and the installing a new version doesn't change the
landscape or data held in the former version. How is it retained if the
program is completely removed from the system?

Your data is most likely saved in outlook.pst.
Usually this is stored in a hidden folder in your profile.
Example:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user ID>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

I doubt that the Version of Outlook is going to do anything to this
file.
From version to version I can always read them into Outlook.
It never asks to convert them.

With OL closed, locate and simply copy all *.pst files.
