Using Greek Alphabet Characters in Word

I am in the process of working on my thesis revisions and need to insert some greek letters into the document for a description of stats, specifically the alpha character. However, the "insert symbol" option does not display the character, changing the table doesn't help at all, and I cannot find anything within the program that allows me to do so. Any help would be appreciated.

I am in the process of working on my thesis revisions and need to insert
some greek letters into the document for a description of stats,
specifically the alpha character.

In the System Preferences, go to International. Under Input Methods,
make sure that the character palette is checked and that you display the
input method menu item.
From there on you can go to the input method menu (under the little
flag) and chose the character palette to find and insert (double-click
or drag and drop) any character.

That works in most applications in MacOS X.
