Using hanging indent on paragraph where first line contains tab

Is there any way to put a hanging indent of more than one tab stop on a paragraph where the first line is indented using a tab? I thought I'd figured out how to do it in Word 2004, but maybe not.

What I'd like to have is something like the following, hopefully this shows up correctly when the HTML formats this message:

Heading
Vocabulary: definition definition definition definition definition definition definition definition blah blah

Where I'd like subsequent lines of the definition to begin aligned with the first word of the definition that follows the vocabulary word.

You may wonder why I don't just use an indent for the start of the vocab word paragraph. The reason is I'm using some paragraph border formatting which indents itself when the paragraph is indented, and I want all the paragraph borders in the same spot on the left. Any ideas?

Hello Anghara,

Sounds like you are going to do this a lot. So best to turn the formatting
you want into a style and apply the style whenever you want it.

Hold down the Shift key and move the top left margin tab in the ruler where
you want the indent to be. If you prefer finer tuning than the standard
rests, hold down the Option key in addition to the Shift key. Apply any
other formatting then turn it into a new style. See Word's Help for styles
or see 'Styles and templates ‹ the keys to consistency and saving time'
starting on page 89 of some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled
"Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download from the
Word MVPs' website (http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Note: In Word 2008, which I don't use yet, some of this information may not
apply, or may be accessible through a different interface. If that causes
problems, post back and someone will help you further.

Hello Anghara -

Use the Format> Paragraph dialog to set your Hanging Indent to something
like 1.25, leaving the Left Indent value at 0. Then use the Ruler to set a
Left or Right Tab stop at a position between 0 & 1.25 [maybe .75] & adjust
the markers on the ruler to tweak the settings as necessary.

I'd highly recommend that once you have the settings right that you define a
Paragraph Style to include those settings as well as your Border (and any
other formatting required). It will not only make it easier to apply &
control but it will insure consistency & stability of the document.

If you're not very familiar with the use of styles you might do well to
review the Help on the subject. There's even more useful information on the
proper use of styles in Clive Huggan's "Bend Word..." article available as a
free download here. It hasn't been updated specifically for Word 2008, but
it is still wholly applicable. The article is intended to be used for
reference, BTW - don't try to memorize everything you find there :)
