Using macros in presentation

I am trying to make a table that has one column and five rows. In each of the
rows I want to have a number of the row centered. I have that done. I need to
be able to click on each number in the row and have a name or number replace
it. I would like to use macros for this however, I have followed the
instructions that the program gives me and when I play the slides it does not
work. I also tried to use other computers and can not be successful on those
as well. How can i fix this problem?
I currently have Microsoft PowerPoint 2003

I have followed the instructions given when I clicked the help at the top of
the page. then i clicked Microsoft PowerPoint Help and the help assistant
came up. I typed 'macros' in to the search area. I then clicked on 'How to
use macros in your presentation' and followed the instructions it gave me of
how to put macros in.

I'm not understanding what a macro code is? The only thing i need is for the
number 1 to be replaced with my name. Is a macro the best way to do this or
is there another way that would be better?

While a macro can do this, it seems like find and replace would be much
simpler.
