Using "today" or another field name in Filter dialog

I am using MS Project Server 2007. In either the View creation filter
dialog or in the Custom filter when displaying the project, I am
having trouble entering anything but an actual date value.

I have seen multiple posts that say you can store Today's date in a
field such as Date1 and then use it in the filter. No matter what
format I use in the filter's Value field I get an error saying it's an
invalid date format.

ex.
Field Name Test Value
Start is greater than Date1

or [Date1] or "Today" or "Today"?, etc.

I get an invalid date format error when I click OK or Validate the
filter.

From all the posts on this forum it seems like all the variations I
have listed work for others.

What am I missing? Help!

thanks.

Thanks for the response Trevor. I am able to get today's date
populated in the date1 field so that is not the problem. The problem
is getting the filter's Value field to accept anything other than an
actual date. I think it's a formatting thing but I have tried every
format I have seen in examples and nothing is working. The only valid
value is an actual date.
