I created a presentation on a Mac that has video clips. When trying to play
it on a PC laptop hooked to a data projectorMG the movies take up the whole
screen instead of remaining small with background around them.

Alas, Macs and PCs frequently don't play nice together. It has to do with
video overlay (means exactly what it sounds like). The Mac "sees" the video
differently than the PC, even though it will play on both systems.

The best solution is (if you have to) use a PC for the video rendering part
of what you're making. Then you shouldn't have any trouble.
