Viewing objects in Word

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When I open word, inserted objects (pictures, formulas, charts) appear as white boxes. If I print them they are there- but I can not see them on the screen.
I can also cut and paste them (as PDFs and they show up fine) so it seems that it is a setting- but I can not figure out what it is.

Do you have any suggestions?

Have you looked in Word> Preferences> View to make sure that Image
Placeholders isn't checked?
