Can this feature be deactivated in Word & Excel ? I have Office 2003 Student
& Teacher Edition loaded. If not, is there a way to speed up the process?

Ask Symantec - it is their program that is doing this.

It is my understanding that the newer versions of Office software has a built
in virus scanning feature in the Office product. I used to have Office 97
loaded, and I didn't have to go through a "virus scanning " routine when I
started Word or Excel. I'm wondering if I can disable or deactive the Office
2003 built in virus scanning feature.

Hi Rick,

If you're running Norton/Symantec Antivirus open the control panel for that product and in the miscellaneous category remove the
Office Plug In. MS Office apps provide hooks to Antivirus software vendors to use to tie into the products. The Office Plugin is
one product that uses those hooks and it's usually relatively slow in getting done.
