W2002 - W97 compatibility problem

Jon

I've been posting this in the New Users group, but Graham Mayor advised me
to post it in this group instead...

I have some documents that were written with W97 which have float over text
objects or text boxes. If I try to modify such a document in W2002 (with
Tools Options Save set to Disable features introduced after Microsoft Word
97), when I try to save the document, even if I haven't changed the float
over text objects themselves, W2002 puts up a popup saying:

"Some of the features in this document aren't supported by Microsoft Word
97.
Pictures and objects with text wrapping will become left or right aligned
Pictures and objects with top and bottom wrapping mayu shift upwards in the
document"

and sure enough they do move, generally to the top of the page. In fact,
even if I open the document, make no changes at all, then choose Save As and
save it as a different name, the problem occurs. Is there a work-around for
this? I need the documents in W97 format since other people with W97 need to
read and edit them.

Hi Jon,

From the information you provided it could be a couple of things,
but my guess at this point from the behavior you're seeing relates
not to the objects being able to float/be wrapped but rather to
additional abilities in versions newer than Word 97 for the location
of the anchor for a particular graphic.

In Word 97 you can't, for example, anchor a graphic to a table cell.
When you go to Word 97, since it doesn't know what to do with the
original anchor location it will move it to a paragraph mark.
The distance from the graphic to its anchor point will generally be
the same as it originally was so now the graphic jumps.

With 'object anchors' turned on in Tools=>Options=>View, select
a graphic in Word 2002 in Print Layout view and see where the anchor
appears. If it's anchored to anything other than a text paragraph
try dragging the anchor to a paragraph mark before saving the file
for use in Word 97.

Generally, the 'disable features' setting should prevent this, along
with using Word97 as the compatibility setting in
Tools=>Options=>Compatability, although anchoring to text in a column
seems to sometimes confuse Word.
