W2K - Table of Contents (field codes) Question

Tom

Sorry if this is the wrong group....

I have created an MS Word "Table of Contents" using the method of
selecting text and using the ALT+SHIFT+O keystroke to mark the text.

The Table of Contents generates as it is supposed to.

However, the TC code marks for each entry are displayed in all Word
views (except Print Preview, where these code marks can't be seen).

How do I hide this code in the other views, say Normal View for
example?

Usually, with field codes, one can toggle their display on and off
with the F9 toggle. However, this toggle doesn't seem to work for the
TC marks, so I see things like the following in all views except Print
View):

Chapter 2{TC "Chapter 2" \f C \l "1" }

Chapter 2 is text, the rest is code, which I want to hide.

How do I hide the code portion from view?
this part -- > {TC "Chapter 2" \f C \l "1" }

Thanks for your help!

TC and XE fields are formatted as Hidden text, so you have to hide that
(Ctrl+*).

Thanks, Suzanne, that's the answer. I guess Word kind of fooled me,
as when I created the Table of Contents, I had the view option "Hidden
Text" unchecked, and yet the TOC code was displayed anyways. But now,
after using CTRL+*, the "Hidden Text" option now begins to work as
advertised. Maybe this over-riding behaviour for the view option is
by design for creation of some code objects in Word - but still, was
unexpected.

Thanks again.

When you insert TC or XE fields, Word automatically turns on the display of
nonprinting characters (including Hidden text); otherwise you wouldn't be
able to see what you're doing.

Yes, that makes sense. But wouldn't it be more consistent and
user-friendly if, in doing so, Word *also* programmatically changed
the checkbox property of the View Option "Hidden Text" to CHECKED (in
order to accurately reflect the new "unhidden text" state change)?

Just a thought. But thanks again anyways!

Ok, my eyes are opening ...

The ¶ button toggles between display of all NPC and
whatever specific ones are checked on the View tab.

Eurika!

You're getting more valuable every minute! :)
