waiting for data to be returned from microsoft query

When I go into Data/Get External Data/New Database Query I
get this "Waiting for data to be returned from Microsoft
Query". I have completely removed Excel and reinstalled.
Occasionally 1 out of 100, the ODBC Data Sources will
appear, but very seldom.
