Web Access / Project Professional login

Hello,

I'll try to make this as simple and straightforward as I can.

I have Project Server 2003 installed on a computer running Windows SBS 2003.
This computer is the domain controller, and it also hosts SQL Server, and
Sharepoint Services.

All users log in to their client workstations using domain accounts.

In IIS Manager, the "ProjectServer" directory has both Anonymous Access and
Integrated Windows Authentication enabled. Within that directory, all ASP
files have these settings as well, with the exception of LGNINT and LGNINTPJ,
which only have Integrated Windows Authentication.

I can log in to Project Web Access using the "default" Administrator account.

In PWA, under Manage security > User authentication, I've got "Mixed".

In PWA, under Admin > Manage users and groups > Users, I've added myself as
a user, with account name of the form "DOMAIN\USERNAME" (which actually
exists as a domain user in the Active Directory), authenticated using Windows
Authentication, member of the "Administrators" group, and with complete
"Administrator" categories and permissions.

I have a client workstation, which has Project Professional 2003 installed.
In Project Professional, under Tools > Enterprise Options > Microsoft Office
Project Server Accounts, I've added a corresponding account for myself. The
account name is again of the form "DOMAIN\USERNAME" (same as in PWA); the
Project Server URL is valid and tested fine. When connecting, it's set to
"Use Windows user account". I also set this account as the default.

Now, the problems.

When I log on to my client workstation using my domain account, and run
Project Professional, I get this error:

"You are attempting to log on using a Windows user account, but you do not
have a Windows user account on this server. You need to change the account in
your profile or contact your server administrator to set up your Windows user
account on this server. (5002)"

As well, on the same workstation, when I go to PWA in IE
(http://XXXXXXX/projectserver/), I am given the "Please log on" screen with
User name and Password boxes. In other words, Windows Authentication doesn't
work. However, when I log on to any *other* client workstation (using my
domain account), which doesn't have Project Professional installed, and go to
PWA, I am logged in immediately (Windows Authentication works fine).

I've looked through MS newsgroups, but have not been able to find anything
concrete that addresses my problems. Please advise.

Many thanks in advance!

I suspect that you didn't correctly set up your Project Server login account
in Microsoft Project Professional. Follow this process to see if we can
solve the problem:

1. Launch Microsoft Project Professional
2. Since it won't let you log in currrently, select the My Computer account
and click the Work Offline button
3. Click Tools - Enterprise Options - Microsoft Office Project Server
Accounts
4. Select your new account, click the Remove button, and then click OK
(let's start over with this process)
5. Click the Add button
6. Give the user login a new name (such as Production Project Server or
something like that)
7. Enter the URL for your Project Server instance
8. Click the Test Connection button to validate the URL (correct it if you
get an error)
9. Select the Use Windows user account option
10. Select the "Set as default" option and click OK
11. Select the "Manually control connnection state" option and click OK
12. Exit Microsoft Project Professional
13. Relaunch Microsoft Project Professional and click the Connect button
14. If prompted to make the site Trusted, complete the directions as
specified in the dialog

This should now log you into Project Server through Microsoft Project
Professional using your Windows user account. Regarding your login issue
with Project Web Access, you need to access PWA using a URL in the form of:

http://servername/projectservername

Do not include anything after the "projectservername" text in the above URL.
When you do this, the system should log you into PWA automatically using
your Windows user account. Let us know if any of this helps.

Hi Dale, thanks for replying.

I followed your steps for MS Project Professinal, but I still get the same
error:

"You are attempting to log on using a Windows user account, but you do not
have a Windows user account on this server. You need to change the account in
your profile or contact your server administrator to set up your Windows user
account on this server. (5002)"

The "Project Server URL" I'm specifying in Project Professional Account
Properties is of the form "http://websitename/ProjectServer", where
"websitename" is the name of the website I created in IIS (custom host
header) , specifically for use with Project Server. It's not the default
website, and it's not the actual computer name of the server. The connection
verifies fine when I press the "Test Connection" button, however.

The URL above ("http://websitename/ProjectServer") is also the exact same
URL I specify when accessing Project Web Access. Except when I go to that URL
on my workstation, I get the User Name and Password fields, asking me to log
on. On other workstations, PWA logs me in right away.

On a side note, I tried specifying just "http://websitename" in Project
Professional Account Properties, but the connection test fails, and I get a
web page that says:

"The following file(s) have been blocked by the administrator:
/isapi/pjdbcomm.dll". I checked Anonymous Access on this file, and it's there.

Hope this sheds some more light on my situation. Thanks again.

Alright! I think I managed to actually fix it. I cleared all the entries in
"Stored User Names and Passwords" in Windows User Account settins, and now
both PWA and Project Professional log me in seamlessly.

Phew :) Think that did it.
