Weird text functions

Every time I select a word or phrase in Word 2004 and apply an action
such as bold or italic, Word changes the entire document. When I click
Cmd-Z, it undoes the entire document change and leaves the word or
phrase with the desired action.

Is there some way to fix this?

You have your Normal style set to automatically update. Go to Format |
Style, select Normal, click Modify, uncheck the "automatically update" box.
