What are .wmz files?

B

Ben Bailey

I am attempting to export graphics files stored in what I
am pretty sure is EPS format within a Word document. I
was given to understand that the way to do this was save
the doc in HTML format and that the files would be saved
out as well.

When I do this some GIF files are exported, which seem to
be the "preview" portion of the EPS graphic. Also, some
files with the extension .wmz are saved out. I am
guessing that these contain the more detailed protion of
the graphic, but I can't find any application to open them.

What are .wmz files and how might I open them?

Hi Ben,

Mary's answer is party correct :) WMZ is an extension
that the MS Media Player folks chose for their files, but
before then, it was what the MS Office folks chose for storing
the compressed (zipped) graphics it stores when you use
File=>Save As Web Page from within Word. (i.e. it's content
not displayable in a browser, but retained for when/if you
reopen a Word created web page in Word).

When you save in Web page format you generally get, as they're
targeted for web browsers, .GIF, .JPG and .PNG graphic types.

Are you trying to extract an original format graphic from Word
or ??? What version of Word are you using.

Hi Bob,

Thanks. I am trying to extract the original
graphic just as you said. I am on Word 2000,
but have Word 2003 available if need be.

Any pointers?

Hi Ben,

Here is what worked for me:

Open Winzip, open file and select your .wmz file. A window
will pop up asking for the full name of the file contained in th
archive. Enter a filename with a wmf extension, and save it. Now yo
can open the wmf file.

The only problem is that this is compressed from the original Wor
graphics file, so you will lose resolution. I am trying to figure ou
how to get the uncompressed version now.....

Good luck,
Brian
