What document size can Word handle?

Hi all!

I have about 30 documents that have to be combined into 1 Word file.
The total document lenght will be over 500 pages (in the future perhaps
even 1000 pages?), with a lot of images. FYI, it is a software
reference manual.
Will Word 2000 be able to work with such a document AND still be
responsive enough AND keep the document size reasonable (lets say
<20MB)?

While Word can handle large files (I have a large Word file with the
complete works of Shakespeare, about 3,300 pages), I don't think you will
like working with those large files. I have a newer, fast computer with a
lot of memory but it is slow going to work with such a large file.

In my case, if I want to work with Romeo and Juliet, I would find the play,
copy it to a new file, and work with it from there.

In your case, I might keep the files separate, work on them, and combine
them at the very end.
