When i type,The letter before vanishes. please help

When i try to type somthing in to a block of text in word the letter in front
vanishes. So that chicken ends up as chcken

Sounds like you are in overtype mode. Press the Insert Key (or double click
on OVR on the status bar)to switch input modes.
