When I update actual work in Project baseline updates, why?

I have a detailed project laid out, complete with assigned human resourse
assignments, and saved the baseline. Now when I attempt to enter the actual
hours worked in the "Task Usage" screen, the assigned value imediately
updates to the same value. No variance results. What gives?

Try inserting the field "Baseline Work". That will have the original "work"
you generated since you baselined the plan.

Never seen that.
Actual Work immediately updates Work, but I've never seen it update
