When update fields see empty box displays instead of inserted/linked pictures

When I select all and update fields an empty box displays
instead of the pictures I have inserted in the document
using the Insert and Link option. Picture placeholders is
unchecked on the Tools menu on the View tab. All the
pictures for the document are in a folder called images
and I have not changed the name or location of the file.
I do not have a problem if I only update the TOC or the
individual cross references in the document.

Using Word 2000

Any ideas what is wrong?
