Word and Excel are part of Microsoft Office. They are not and never have
been a part of any operating system (Windows XP Home Edition is an operating
system). Microsoft Works includes a simple word processor (not Word) and a
simple spreadsheet application (not Excel), as well as other functions.
Microsoft Works Suite (not just plain Works) includes Word 2002 as well
(plus a load of other helpful apps). If you want to get both Word and Excel
(as well as Outlook and other Office apps), you'll need to buy some version
of Word. If you are a student or teacher, the Student & Teacher Edition is
your best bet.

Meanwhile, Windows does include a rudimentary word processing application
called WordPad that may suffice until you get something beefier.
