Where do temporary documents go?

When you download a word document from the internet, where does it get saved
to?

What do you mean by 'downloading' a Word document?
Do you click on the link and open the Word document in IE, or type in the
URL of the document in the Open dialog box in Word ... or something else?

That depends. If you open the document directly, it goes to a temp folder
that is (probably) set in your browser options. If you choose Save As, your
browser/mail client will default to the last folder used. It is always
preferable to save the file, because then you can put it where you can find
it again, and it won't be deleted because it's in a temp folder.

If you're looking for a document you opened and saved in Word, look in
Word's history (My Recent Documents). If you can find the document there
(and this is really chancy), when you mouse over it, the full path will be
displayed. If you right-click and choose Properties, then select the General
tab, you will see the path. Although it may be truncated, you can select it
with the mouse (it will scroll) and use Ctrl+C to copy it. You can then
paste it somewhere else for inspection.
