Which version to purchase?

I did a search of the discussions, but still am not clear.

We have three people that will need to use Project, but not concurrently.
Can I purchase 3 licenses for the standard edition, save the project file on
the server, and have others access that data (like putting a word doc on the
server and having other users open it)? Or will I need to purchase
professional and server to do this?

Yes, if you have three people using project pro and project server would
appear to be overkill.
Project Standard will work in the way you describe "like a word document".
