MS Project Q's

New Administrator

I'm trying to make the best decision in integrating MS project 2007 into my
Server SBS 2003 network. I currently have Project Standard 2003 and 2007 as a
standalone installed on multiple laptops.

Scenario:
-1 SBS Server 2003 w/ MS Project Server 2007 installed
-Client Laptops

Question 1:

Project Std 2007
I currently have Project Std –standalone software installed on 25 laptops.
Do I need to purchase 25 Project 2007 CAL’s to collaborate/interact with
Project server?

Question 2:

Project Pro 2007
With Project Pro do I only need to purchase 25 MS Project Pro to
collaborate/interact with Project server 2007?

Question 3:
If I was to only have Project Server 2007 installed on my server, would it
install a client version of Project to my other laptops that currently do not
have Project installed and all I would need to do is purchase is Project 2007
CALs.

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

In the future, you would rather post Server questions to
microsoft.public.project.server, that is where the gurus are.

Meanwhile let me explain what you need to work with Server 2007

A Project Pro 2007 licence for each user that will update and work with
project plans (which for those users implies the CAL)
On top of that a CAL for each user that will only look at the data without
having to modify them (management, resources..)

Assuming yours are Project Server questions, please post all of your future
Project Server questions in the microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup,
as this newsgroup is dedicated to the Microsoft Project desktop application
only. To answer your questions:

1. Project Standard 2007 does not work with Project Server 2007. So, no,
you don't need CALs for these users since they cannot connect to the Project
Server 2007 using Project Standard 2007. You will need to upgrade them to
Project Professional 2007, which works with Project Server 2007.

2. If you purchase a copy of Project Profession 2007 for each project
manager, you do not need to purchase a separate CAL for each of them, since
each copy of Project Professional 2007 includes a CAL for Project Server
2007.

3. No. You have to purchase and manually install a copy of Project
Professional 2007 on the laptop of each project manager and each Project
Server administrator. You (or the project manager) must also need to
configure Project Professional 2007 to connect to Project Server 2007, as
the software does not auto-configure a Project Server 2007 login account.

In addition to the above answers, you will also need to purchase one CAL for
everyone else who will access Project Server 2007 using the PWA interface.
This includes executives and team members. Because you are at the beginning
stages of this process, I would strongly recommend you purchase our books on
Project Server 2007 at:

http://www.projectserverbooks.com

We have one book specifically for the Project Server administrator. This
book will help you to install, configure, and manage your Project Server
2007 system. We have a second book specifically for project managers. This
book documents everything a project manager needs to know to use Project
Server 2007 well. We also provide open enrollment classes on Project Server
2007, either in person in our training center in NYC, or in cyberspace over
the Internet. You might want to consider taking training as well, as this
will be a huge time saver for you (and will save you frustration as well).
You can register for our training at:

http://projectservertraining.com/learning/schedule.aspx

Hope this helps.
