Why are my emails disappearing?

When reading my email messages in Outlook 2007 my emails disappear. For
example, I read email #1 and go to read the next email #2 without deleting
#1. After reading email #2 I try to go back to email #1 and it has
disappeared from my inbox. It's not in the deleted folder, draft folder,
etc. Where are they going and how do I stop this? Auto archive is not
enabled.

Most likely you have filtered your view to display only unread messages.
Examine your view settings.

How do I check this?
