Why aren't styles persistent?

I repeatedly have the following problem. I format the document the way I want
it using styles and save the document. When I re-open the document, the
formatting has changed. This is very frustrating.

In the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box, make sure to clear the
"Automatically update document styles" option.

To display the dialog box, click Templates and Add-Ins on the Tools menu
(Word 97--2007). In Word 2007, click Document Template on the Developer tab
(which you can display via Office button | Word Options, Popular category).
