Why did my document return from recepient in hieroglyphics?

Sent document as attachment, and when returned from recepient, it went from a
two page document to 11 pages of heiroglyphics.

Hi

How did you receive the document? Attached to an email? If so, save the
attachment to your hard drive and open it from there. When you do File >
Open, make sure the "Files of type" box says "Word documents".
