Why do my word documents open in notepad only?

When I open my word documents (.doc) they only open in notepad (.txt). I can
right click and have them open as a regular word document.
Thanks.

It looks like the file association for .doc type document is not set. You can
set this manually by opening Windows Explorer under Tools, Folders Options, file
Types or use Detect and Repair option in Word.

What OS are you running? Somehow you have managed to associate Notepad as the
app to open files with a .doc ending. Try right-clicking on a Word doc, click
open with. If it already shows Word ignore it and click Choose Program...
Select Word in the dialogue box that opens and check the box that says
"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Click OK.
