Why do some MS Word documents not open?

I am having problems opening some MS Word documents, which previously
presented no problem at all.

Some documents always open.
Some documents sometimes open.
Some documents never open (or at least have not yet, after a dozen or so
attempts).

Why is this?

MS Word version = "Word 2002 (10.4219.4219) SP-2"
