Why do words change when spacing forward?

While typing a paragraph, when I space forward, with the cursor within a
word, the next letters disappear. If I try to back space those letters
disappear correctly. Example: Type a word, go back to change the r and it
will put the r and take the next letter away. If you hit space it also will
delete the next letter. I've never had this happen before with Office!
