Why does a window suddenly become untypable?

When I'm writing a document or or email, the window I'm working in suddenly
becomes inactive -- light blue -- and won't accept typing until I click on it
with the mouse. How do I fix this so the window stays live throughout the
session?

Is it possible you are accidentally pressing a key that activates
something other than the document window? For example pressing Alt
will activate the menu bar and cause the document window to lose
focus.
